Why ketamine

Ketamine is an anesthetic that's used off-label for depression. In several studies at Yale, more than half of the participants who were given ketamine infusions showed a significant decrease in symptoms associated with depression after only 24 hours.

 

These results are significant for two primary reasons. First, these participants were people who had experienced no meaningful improvement on other antidepressants. Second, the alleviation of depression symptoms after just 24 hours is extremely fast compared to other options, which can take weeks to kick in.

Why RETREATS

“The magnitude of the effect we saw with psilocybin was about four times larger than what clinical trials have shown for traditional antidepressants on the market,” says Alan Davis, PhD and adjunct assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. 

 

"This could be a game changer if these findings hold up in future ‘gold-standard’ placebo-controlled clinical trials.”

Why TRIALS

Researchers have made important advancements when it comes to the treatment of depression and anxiety, including both pharmacological and behavioral interventions. Nevertheless, existing treatments often have ill side effects or are ineffective for certain patients, pointing to the need for more treatment options.

The current meta-analysis examined the effects of psilocybin in combination with behavioral interventions on anxiety and depression in samples with elevated symptoms. Across four studies, effects on anxiety and depression were significant.
